Sleep problems in people working in shifts like in BPO’s

Business process outsourcing companies are considered as a boon to India’s economic growth and a life changer for young generation. The employment opportunities increased and fresh graduates were employed in BPO’s in a large number. The main problem with these BPO companies, also referred as call centre companies is that they need to work even during the night hours to cater the clients who are mostly based in America or U.K.

Apart from other occupational hazards because of these night shifts, one major problem an employee would face is sleeping disorder. Nights are considered as thru time to sleep but as the clients are based in a country where it is day for them, the situation forces them to work at night.

To give rest to the body and mind, it is important for these shift employees to sleep during day. But how far one succeeds in it? During day time, lot of disturbance is expected in the form of movement or activity going around. People who have experienced these highly disturbed sleep pattern are actually deprived of quality sleep. This is also against the nature and against the biological clock. This type of sleeping disorder is medically known as circadian rhythm sleep disorders (where sleep and wake pattern is disturbed).     When a sleeping pattern is disturbed or when sufficient sleep cannot be achieved during day time, concentration on work is affected. Moreover, for plant operators of a large chemical plant or assembly line workers in manufacturing units, physical work is also involved in the night shift. On a longer run, fatigue/ excessive tiredness experienced by these people will affect both work and health

Side effects of sleeping disorders

Every individual needs sleep to give rest to both body and mind. A sound sleep facilitates to wake up refreshed. While sleeping, if both body and mind had sufficient rest and relaxation, all the activities of the next day can be efficiently performed. Due to sleep deprivation, this pattern is completely disturbed for those who work in night shifts, and also onset of physical and psychological health problems becomes inevitable.
